The 37th Annual Black Maria Film Festival will be in the Flying Monkey Arts theatre, second floor south, for a two part screening: 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM & 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM. Hosted by the Film Co-op, the Black Maria Film Festival is an open genre touring festival featuring animation, experimental, documentary, and narrative works that seek out exceptional indie films that shine a light on issues of importance worldwide. This year’s Black Maria Film Festival selections of spirited shorts were curated by current director, Jane Steuerwald, to explore, enrich and expand the expressive possibilities of film as art. The history of film began with the short. The first films, including those created in Thomas Edison’s “Black Maria” film studio in West Orange, N.J. were about a minute long. In honor of the tradition of Edison we are celebrating this 37th year of programming. The Black Maria Film Festival takes you on a cinematic journey that is not to be missed. This is the gift of truly great films – showing, not telling, enlightening, not coercing and searching for what makes us truly human.
The Black Maria Film Festival Cafe will be set up in the lounge area outside the theater again this year with Happy Tummy box lunches available and lively discussion encouraged between screenings. Admission is $15 for both screenings or $10 for a single screening.
